Ed Van Put begins this important new book with the history of native brook trout and offers little-known details about their sizes, abundance, and demise from over-fishing, the growth of streamside industries, and the introduction of competitive species. He records the attempts to restore the depleted fishery by restocking streams with hatchery-bred trout, and then the introduction of rainbow trout from California and brown trout from Europe, and their impact upon Catskill trout fishing.
Throughout, this is a history of people and methods as well as rivers, and there are profiles of Theodore Gordon, Art Flick, Harry and Elsie Darbee, Sparse Grey Hackle, and more. No serious trout fisherman, in any part of the country, will want to miss this pioneering portrait of a seminal region in American angling history.

For me, this was a very entertaining and nostalgic look back at my many fly fishing excursions. I used to tie flies and fly fish for trout in the small streams and brooks in northern Pennsylvania. The description of the catskills streams is very close to what I remember in northern Pa. I also have the audible audio version. They are both very refreshing to read and listen to.Product details

Trout Fishing in the Catskills (Audible Audio Edition) Ed Van Put Richard Allen Audible Studios Books Reviews
The book is mostly short biographies of people who fished on
the western streams. there is very little on tributaries to the Esopus above ashokan reservoir like for example the Bushkill and its further tributaries. Also not much on the most crowded and exciting reach of the Esopus just opposite the ski slope and its tributary reached under the railroad bride. the shokan tribs like the bushkill were reached in a short drive from Kingston via rt 28a and those in the phonecia area about a 30 minute drive from Kingston along rt 28. i grew up going to the bushkill area on sundays with a family picnic aside the bushkill both trout fishing and taking a swim in its swimming hole. A little dam was constrcted with bushkill. cobbles to maintain its level. heading up the bushkill road one had narrower steeper streams to fish. One time the game wardens watched my father and me for a long time then came down and checked his creel. they nailed him for one trout just less than 7" and a fine of $10.
Great indepth history of the beginning of flyfishing in the Catskills with biographies of the flyfishing legends...
First class effort by the master of the Catskill rivers
Great book!
This book contains a lot of useful information in understanding the locations and history of the many streams and rivers in the Catskills. Only con that I found was the writer would repeat his stories every once in awhile. Overall a very nice read. Never lost interest while reading.
I live and fish in the Catskills and haven't found a better book about the region. Ed Van Put has done an excellent job of collecting local history in this book, and I can't help but feel as though my fishing experiences have been enhanced by knowing some of the area's history.
This is not a "how to" book, so do not buy it expecting a list of flies or fly fishing techniques. It is a book about the history of the Catskills, the people who have lived here, and the importance of the rivers and fishing found here...and a very good book at that!
A wonderful story of the Catskill stream history as it integrates with the development of the of a fascinating part of ou nation's history. A great story for the flyfisher, history buff or the person who has an interest in the effect of the growth of the cities on their surrounding ecosystem. A thorough, work by a man with deep roots in New York State ecology and wildlife issues.
